WMMC is Hosting an EKG Screening Clinic Day Targeted to Prevent Cardiac Death in Young Athletes

Warrensburg, MO (July 28, 2017)—Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) is hosting an electrocardiogram (EKG) screening day at Central Family & Sports Medicine on Friday, Aug. 18 from 9:20 am – 3:00 pm for young athletes to have their heart risks assessed.

Sports and Family Medicine physicians, Drew Glover, MD, and Dana Brewington, MD, will be providing 10-minute time slots for EKG screenings as well as time slots for pre-participation sports physicals with EKGs. These potentially life-saving screenings are only $30 each (or $60 with a pre-participation physical).

An EKG screening detects problems within the electrical activity of the heart as a line tracing on paper. Conditions are identified by the spikes and dips recorded. Screenings are important because they help identify individuals who could be at risk and can potentially prevent heart disease and sudden death in young athletes. Central Family & Sports Medicine’s EKG hosts a specific software that has been integrated specifically for athletes.

Recently, Dr. Glover spoke at a free community event hosted by WMMC. He highlighted the importance of EKG screenings and how they can save a young athlete’s life.

“As a sports medicine provider, I encourage all high school athletes to have an EKG screening at least once during their high school career,” said Dr. Drew Glover. “Sudden cardiac arrest is currently the leading cause of death in young athletes. Having an EKG screening alongside a pre-participation screening can save an athlete’s life.”

Drs. Glover and Brewington are board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Glover served as Chief Resident in the Family and Community Medicine Residency program. Dr. Brewington completed her residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
