Heart Care of Warrensburg Will Transition to an Independent Service of WMMC

Rick Brown, MD, FACC and Teresa Smith, NP BC-C

Warrensburg, MO – Cuidado del corazón de Warrensburg will become a fully independent service of Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) effective Dec. 1, 2024, providing more consistent coverage for patients while enabling the hospital to expand its cardiology capabilities.

Two board-certified providers, cardiologist Rick Brown, MD, FACC and nurse practitioner Teresa Smith, NP BC-C, will lead the clinic’s advanced cardiac program, offering more consistent coverage between the two dedicated cardiology providers with full-day clinics, five days a week. This increased coverage will also enable Heart Care of Warrensburg to offer more consultative services and support for WMMC’s inpatient and emergency departments.

Dr. Brown has over 25 years delivering invasive, non-interventional cardiology services in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit and Warrensburg. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Teresa Smith brings over 14 years of cardiology experience to Heart Care of Warrensburg, along with eight years in pharmaceutical research and more than four years in critical care and interventional radiology. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rockhurst College in 1993 and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at Maryville University in St. Louis in 2017.

Both Dr. Brown and Smith previously provided care through a WMMC partnership with Midwest Heart & Vascular Specialists-HCA Midwest Health. As an independent service of WMMC, Heart Care of Warrensburg patients will now have a simplified billing process for cardiology services.

“Bringing cardiology services under the WMMC umbrella of specialties has always been part of the strategic vision,” said WMMC President and CEO Darinda Dick. “Heart disease is the leading diagnosis in Johnson County and across the nation. We are immensely grateful to our tertiary care partners that have provided cardiac care over the years, and we know that independently operating this clinic is a critical step in ensuring the long-term goals to expand the advanced care capabilities for our patients.”

Heart Care of Warrensburg provides a wide variety of specialized cardiac care, from routine screenings to the treatment of complex heart conditions. Brown and Smith bring extensive experience in diagnosing and treating conditions such as chest pain, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, arrhythmias, heart valve disease, and more. Patients can conveniently schedule appointments without a referral.
