WMMC to Host Diabetes Education and Empowerment Program

Warrensburg, MO (January 8, 2020)—Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) is excited to announce the Diabetes Education and Empowerment Program (DEEP). This program will begin Thursday, March 4 at WMMC and is an eight-week comprehensive program for people struggling with diabetes to manage their situation and lead a fulfilling life.

The eight-week DEEP program is entirely FREE for people committed to learning how to manage their diagnosis.

This program is for anyone with diabetes who:

  • does not know how to manage diabetes,
  • has fears of future complications,
  • wants to learn more on how to eat and prepare meals for a diabetes diagnosis,
  • is confused by the technology and devices for diabetes,
  • OR if you are a caregiver for someone with diabetes.

The DEEP program requires participants to meet once a week for 8 weeks on Thursdays from 6-8 pm to understand their diabetes and receive their certificate. They will learn how to control diabetes through games, activities, and conversation.

This comprehensive program includes:

  • the human body and its response to diabetes,
  • risk factors for diabetes,
  • preventing and identifying complications,
  • discovering the right diet and meal planning,
  • understanding medications and technology options available,
  • finding the right physical activity for your needs,
  • meet with other individuals with similar diagnosis and a sense of community,
  • daily life with diabetes and empowering family and friends to support you.

“I’ve seen so many people receive the diabetes diagnosis but have no clue what to do after,” Kendra Butner, nurse practitioner and DEEP educator, says. “That is why I am so excited to be offering this education for our community for free. Living with diabetes does not have to be a struggle, and this class empowers individuals to take control of their life.”

Class instructors are Kendra Butner, MSN, BC/FNP, CDCES; Sherry Roberts, RD, CDCES; and Ciara Pennock, FNP-S.

Take charge of your life by learning how to control your diabetes! Seating is limited, and WMMC hopes to host additional classes in the future. Reserve your spot at WMMC.com/DEEP. For questions, call (660) 262-7717.
