According to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, colorectal cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death. Providers diagnose about 150,000 Americans with colorectal cancer each year.
More than half of all colorectal cancers are attributable to modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, an unhealthy diet, high alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and excess body weight. In addition, a large proportion of colorectal cancer incidence and mortality is preventable through regular screening, surveillance, and high-quality treatment.
Colorectal cancer is preventable with screening and highly treatable when detected early. The number of people who have died from colorectal cancer has steadily decreased since the mid-1980s due to increased screening and changing lifestyles. There are more than 1.5 million colorectal cancer survivors in the U.S.
Most insurance providers cover colonoscopies for individuals 45 or older. To schedule a colonoscopy, visit wmmc.com/colonoscopy or call 660-747-5558.
