WMMC Urges Men and Women to get Screened for Colorectal Cancer

Warrensburg, MO (February 9, 2017)—Every year, more than 148,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, commonly referred to as colon cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States each year.

During March—Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month—Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) urges adults to speak with their primary care provider about a screening because the best prevention method is early detection. Symptoms aren’t always present, especially at first, making screening even more important.

More than 90 percent of colorectal cancers occur in both men and women over the age of 50, and the risk only increases with age. Other risk factors include inflammatory bowel conditions, family history, low fiber diet, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol use.

How can you prevent colorectal cancer? Key factors include physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and avoiding excessive drinking. Those who have any of the risk factors are encouraged to talk to their physician about screening options.

Our community has multiple physicians that perform screening options—Surgical Services of Warrensburg (660-747-5558); Warrensburg Internal Medicine (660-747-8154); and Family Practice Associates (660-747-7751). Remember to always consult your primary care provider to discuss your healthcare and screening options:
