At WMMC, we are committed to providing top-notch care and advanced technology to support your breast health. Mammograms are essential for early breast cancer detection, and understanding the process can help ensure a smooth and informed experience. Here’s everything you need to know about getting a mammogram at WMMC.
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray used to detect changes in breast tissue, helping to identify breast cancer early when it’s most treatable. Our radiologists review these images to find any potential issues. Today’s digital mammogram machines provide clearer images, enabling our team to spot even the smallest areas of concern.
When Should I Start Annual Screening Mammograms?
The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin considering annual screening mammograms at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, speak with your primary care provider about starting earlier. Your provider may suggest an earlier start based on your personal history.
Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammograms
There are two types of mammograms:
- Screening Mammograms: These are routine exams for women with no symptoms, usually starting at age 40. They are done annually to detect early signs of breast cancer.
- Diagnostic Mammograms: If a screening mammogram or physical symptoms (like lumps or pain) suggest the need for further investigation, a diagnostic mammogram will be scheduled for a more detailed look.
Do I Need a Referral for an Annual Screening Mammogram?
No referral is needed for an annual screening mammogram once you are of age. However, a referral is required for a diagnostic mammogram, which your primary care provider will arrange.
Are Mammograms Painful?
While mammograms can be uncomfortable, especially with the pressure of the plates squeezing the breasts to get clear images, most women find the discomfort manageable. If you’re premenopausal, try to avoid scheduling your mammogram during the week before your period when your breasts may be tender. If you experience discomfort, feel free to ask the technologist to adjust your positioning to make you more comfortable. Remember, the procedure only takes a few moments, and it’s an essential step in maintaining your health.
What Are My Screening Options at WMMC?
WMMC offers both 2D and 3D mammograms. We strongly encourage women to consider 3D mammography, especially those with dense breast tissue. This advanced technology takes multiple x-rays to create a detailed, 3D image of your breast tissue, making it easier to detect potential issues. 3D mammography provides our radiologists with a clearer, more accurate image than traditional 2D mammograms.
Are There Any Risks Associated with Mammograms?
Mammograms use low doses of radiation, and we take special care to minimize exposure. However, it’s important to be aware of the radiation, which is why routine screenings before age 40 are not generally recommended unless advised by your healthcare provider. If you have concerns about the procedure, we encourage you to discuss them with your primary care provider.
What to Expect at Your Mammogram
When you arrive for your mammogram at WMMC, a technologist will greet you and guide you through the process. You’ll be asked to complete a questionnaire about your breast history before changing into a gown. Then, the mammogram procedure will begin, either 2D or 3D, based on your selection. Once finished, the technologist will inform you of when to expect your results.
How to Prepare for Your Screening Mammogram
- Avoid using deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment, as these can interfere with the images.
- Wear a two-piece outfit for ease of removal—your top and bra will need to be taken off.
- If you’ve had mammograms done elsewhere, please arrange for those images to be sent to WMMC so our radiologists can compare them.
- Have breast implants? Let us know in advance so we can take the necessary steps to ensure all breast tissue is captured.
