Warrensburg, MO (March 27, 2019) — Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) simulated a violent intruder drill that took place in our hospital on March 27th, 2019.

The drill consisted of an officer from the Warrensburg Police Department posed as the violent intruder with an unloaded airsoft gun, and three drills took place to simulate different threats. He entered the facility at the Main Entrance and proceeded to the MedTele hall for each of these drills, but threatened participants differently each time. The simulation did not interfere with any active patient care. WMMC employees posed as staff in the line of fire while the University of Central Missouri nursing students posed as patients.

We appreciate all the agencies who aided us in preparing for this type of emergency situation, including the Warrensburg Police Department, University of Central Missouri Department of Public Safety, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Ambulance District, Warrensburg Fire Department, UCM Nursing Program, Johnson County Fire Protection District, Johnson County Central Dispatch E-911, Johnson County Emergency Management, and Mid-America Regional Council.

The drills that took place were used as an opportunity to test the hospital’s current policies. A debriefing following the drills allowed hospital leadership to review these policies and communication in junction with first responders.

For questions about this exercise, please call Kim Lockard, WMMC Emergency Management Program Administrator at (660) 262-7525.
