Women’s Health Questions Answered by Dr. Alumbaugh

What kind of work do you do as an OB/GYN in Warrensburg?

Dr. Alumbaugh: “As an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, I deliver care to women throughout their life. That includes sexual health, contraception, care throughout pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period, wellness visits, pelvic pain, abnormal menses, menopause, and postmenopausal issues. As an OB/GYN, we take care of it all.

What women’s health tips do you give to your patients at WMMC?

Dr. Alumbaugh: “I try to encourage my patients to lead an active lifestyle, and eat a balanced diet. For so many people, exercise is viewed in a negative light and it is something that is not enjoyable. A lot of people have barriers to regular exercise like a previous injury, low back pain, or asthma. I try to encourage them that any activity outside of their normal day-to-day life is beneficial. It is important to find something that they enjoy doing or look forward to rather than just another chore on life’s never-ending list. That is the kind of activity that will be sustained for a lifetime.”

How often do women need a mammogram?

Dr. Alumbaugh:Typically, women should begin annual mammograms at age 40. That could be different depending on family and individual history. Early signs of breast cancer include breast pain, skin changes like dimpling or dilated pores, nipple retraction or inversion, or nipple discharge. It is so important for women to do regular self-exams so that if something is changing they are more likely to notice.

What conservative measures can women take to help in their daily lives?

Dr. Alumbaugh:There are so many things that women can do in their daily life to maintain their long-term health. Avoiding tobacco is, of course, at the top of that list. So many of my patients are shocked to hear that tobacco plays a huge role in propagating HPV-related disease, the virus that causes most cervical cancer. Along with being active, I encourage my patients to stay hydrated, take a multivitamin, and most importantly of all, to make time for themselves. People underestimate the importance of doing what brings them joy.

Why did you decide to specialize in obstetrics?

Dr. Alumbaugh: “I decided to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology because I enjoyed the variety of the field. Some days I am delivering babies; others I spend the day in the operating room. This field can be very fast-paced and I enjoy staying busy.”

What is your typical day like as an OB/GYN in Warrensburg?

Dr. Alumbaugh: “One of the best parts of my job is that there is no typical day! Office days are generally more predictable but even then there can be surprises. I love the unpredictable nature of this field, it keeps me feeling challenged, on my toes, and always thinking.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Dr. Alumbaugh: “I love most aspects of my job, but easily the most rewarding part is being able to deliver a healthy baby to parents that I have worked through a loss with previously. When things come full circle like that it makes my heart sing. Every delivery is so special, and I am often teary-eyed and awestruck to be witness to such a blessed event. But those deliveries get me in all of the feels and give me the strength to keep working through the sad times with patients.”
