WMMC Celebrates Level III Stemi (Heart Attack) Center Designation
Warrensburg, MO (June 7, 2018)—Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) hosted area residents and organizations on Thursday, June 7, for a ribbon cutting celebration in honor of receiving the Missouri Level III STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction, heart attack) Center designation.
With this designation, WMMC has now received its third and final designation of the Missouri Emergency Medical Care Time Critical Diagnosis (TDS) System: Level III Center for Stroke, Trauma and STEMI.
“This initiative is dear my heart. Minutes matter in these situations,” says Darinda Reberry, WMMC President and Chief Executive Officer. “Through our coordinated efforts and evidence-based protocols, we’re providing the best possible care to our patient. This would not have been possible without the dedication of our emergency team, Johnson County Ambulance District, LifeFlight, cardiac rehabilitation and many more.”
Missouri’s TCD system represents the continuum of services, including public education, about prevention, recognition of signs and symptoms, and the importance of immediately seeking care during time-critical emergencies: trauma, stroke, and heart attack. It then circles through the series of system components to emphasize evidence-based and best practices for incident recognition, first aid, 911 access, response coordination, pre-hospital response, transport, emergency department care, acute medical care and rehabilitation. Finally, it incorporates quality-improvement processes through the system.
Time is of the essence, which is why it is important that anyone with signs (see below) of a heart attack should contact 9-1-1 immediately.
Signs of Heart Attack:
Pain or discomfort in the chest.
- Feeling lightheaded, nausea or vomiting.
- Jaw, neck or back pain.
- Discomfort or pain in the arm or shoulder.
- Shortness of breath.
- Symptoms may vary between men and women. Women can experience a heart attack without any chest pressure. They may have shortness of breath, pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, dizziness, lightheadedness, upper back pressure or extreme fatigue.
