WMMC Patient Profiles: Michelle Schubert, Breast Cancer

In November 2020, Michelle Schubert was diagnosed with breast cancer following a biopsy from Western Missouri Medical Center General Surgeon Dr. Amira Ghazali. Read on to learn more about Michelle’s incredible story and her fight against breast cancer.

Michelle’s Story

In October 2020, Michelle Schubert attended Western Missouri Medical Center’s annual Ladies Night Out event. This event, held every October, promotes Breast Cancer Awareness and encourages women to schedule their annual mammograms. Inspired by the event, Michelle decided to schedule her mammogram. Little did she know, this routine wellness check would save her life.

Her mammogram raised a red flag and in November 2020, and Michelle was diagnosed with Stage IIIA Carcinoma breast cancer following a biopsy from Dr. Amira Ghazali, a General Surgeon at WMMC. She started treatment soon after.

“I had 16 rounds of chemotherapy (at the University of Kansas Medical Center) from December 2020 [to] May 2021, a bilateral mastectomy on June 14, 2021, and I’m currently undergoing 25 rounds of radiation,” Michelle said. “I will have reconstruction surgery in April 2022.”

Treatment for breast cancer has been challenging, but Michelle’s support system has been a solid rock to keep her strong throughout the process.

“My cancer journey has been a time like no other in my life,” she said. “I have learned so much about myself, but most importantly, I have been encouraged and lifted up by so many of my family and friends, and particularly fellow breast cancer survivors.”

Part of that support foundation has been the providers at WMMC, Michelle’s preferred hospital partner in Warrensburg.

“Dr. Amira Ghazali and Cindy Schnell were truly a blessing as I received my diagnosis and made my decisions for treatment,” Michelle said. “They were empathetic and supportive, just like family, as I faced the worst days of my life.”

As Michelle continues working toward remission, she encourages other breast cancer survivors to rely on their support system in times of need, and remain engaged in their treatment.

“Don’t be afraid to ask your medical team questions and gain the information you need to make the best decisions for your treatment,” Michelle said. “Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help and let others help you. Take each day as they come. Better days are ahead.”
