Missouri Mandates All Insurances to Cover 3D Mammograms

Warrensburg, MO (August 14, 2018)—Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) is pleased to announce that starting August 28, 2018 all insurances will be mandated by the state of Missouri to cover 3D mammograms.

Currently all insurances are required to cover 2D mammograms, and they will continue to pay the 2D mammogram rate until the end of the year. Depending on their plan, patients may have to pay the difference of the 2D cost verus the 3D cost. Insurers will have to cover it at the full 3D rate starting Jan. 1, 2019, when new insurance plans with new premiums go into effect.

When given the choice, between 2D and 3D mammograms, 30 percent of women will choose the 2D Mammogram, possibly because of the cost difference. However, a 3D mammogram can reduce the chances of getting a call back by 40 percent. It takes multiple images – one image per millimeter of breast tissue – compared to a 2D mammogram that takes 4 images total. Click here to learn more about your annual 3D mammogram screening.

“We want our patients to be sure of their diagnosis,” says John Waddell, M.D., of WMMC Diagnostic Imaging. “We love the wide-angle imaging and the clarity that it offers our doctors. More importantly, we believe it can save lives because it leaves breast cancer with no place to hide.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Early detection is the key to an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan, made possible through an annual screening mammogram.
